Yin & Yang

The opposing forces, Yin and Yang are considered one of the basic fundamentals to an advance approach in understand feng shui theories. The ancient Chinese philosophers believed that everything in the universe contained elements of both Yin and Yang. The philosophers then classified feminine, earth, passiveness, mysterious, softness, moon, coldness, darkness, submission, etc under the Yin principles. Masculine, heaven, aggressiveness, evident, hardness, sun, heat, light, dominance, etc are classified as Yang principles.

Yin and Yang is expressed in the following picture as a simple symbol.

Each of these opposites produce the other. Yin cannot exist without Yang and vice versa. This non-stop production of Yin from Yang and Yang from Yin occurs cyclically, therefore there is no one principle continually dominating or determining the other. All opposites that one experiences such as wealth and poverty, power and submission, health and sickness, birth and death, etc, can be explained in reference to the temporary dominance of one principle over the other. Since no one principle dominates eternally, that means that all conditions are subject to change into their opposites. Pure or absolute Yin or Yang does not exist. There is always some degree of the opposite contained in anything that exists, no matter how extreme the degree of Yin or Yang.

Yin and Yang are always complimentary to each other, therefore a normal, healthy, functional, durable existence of everything in nature depends on the mutual enhancement and beneficial interaction of the opposite forces. Day and night must co-exist, birth and death must occur, man and woman must be present. On one level, when there is an overbalanced relationship between opposites, it would lead to destruction. Therefore, the balance of Nature must always be maintained.

Yin nourishes, sustains and controls Yang and vice versa. The opposites also hold each other in balance and exert mutual control. Just like the soil cultivated by man, produces crops for mankind. If there is insufficient care and attention to the crops, the result might be more weeds than crops. Birth is followed eventually by death, economic boom followed by recession.

There are unlimiting examples explaining the relationship of Yin and Yang. Its influence on feng shui will remain strong as long as time permits.
